The “Dr. Phil” talk show is one of the most-watched and the most popular of all time. And after 21 seasons, CBS Media Ventures announced just recently that the talk show is ending soon.
CBS Media Ventures said that through the decades, this show had helped its guests off-camera by providing over $35 million in resources. And after over twenty years on the air, the show still attracts an average of two million people for every new episode. The show was nominated for 31 Daytime Emmys during the course of its long run.
The media company wants everyone to understand that it was Dr. Phil McGraw himself who decided to stop making new episodes.
And in 2023-2024, CBS will be showing reruns of old episodes of the favorite daytime show. The old episodes will be repurposed and feature new content. Some of these would be “wraparounds and intros by McGraw,” “guest updates,” and more.
In a statement, Dr. Phil explained his decision to end the long-running talk show. He said, “I have been blessed with over 25 wonderful years in daytime television. With this show, we have helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers through everything from addiction and marriage to mental wellness and raising children. This has been an incredible chapter of my life and career, but while I’m moving on from daytime, there is so much more I wish to do.”
Although the 72-year-old has not revealed specifics with regard to his future plans, retirement does not appear to be one of them.
In early 2024, Phil McGraw said that he will be focusing more on launching new prime-time programming with new partnerships. He said, “I am compelled to engage with a broader audience because I have grave concerns for the American family, and I am determined to help restore a clarity of purpose as well as our core values.”
In a statement regarding this subject, Steve LoCascio, president of CBS Media Ventures, said: “Phil is a valued partner and member of the CBS/King World family, and while his show may be ending after 21 years, I’m happy to say our relationship is not… Phil changed the daytime landscape as the force behind one of the most popular talk shows ever on daytime TV – we plan to be in Dr. Phil’s business with the library for years to come and welcome opportunities to work together in the future.”
Before he became a huge television star of his show, Phil McGraw ran his own jury consulting firm, ‘Courtroom Sciences Inc.’ His experiences then inspired the series, which he co-created and executive produced. He and his son Jay are now the executive producers of the courtroom drama “So Help Me Todd,” which stars Skylar Astin.
He has not only moved into scripted television, but he has also become a podcasting expert with his series Phil In The Blanks and Mystery & Murder: Analysis By Dr. Phil.
Dr. Phil began his professional career as a psychiatrist and a human behavior specialist in the early 1980s. He first gained widespread exposure in the late ’90s when he became a regular guest on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show.’ It was originally produced by Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and she remained invested in McGraw’s success. This would later pave a path for Dr. Phil to make a name for himself. He became a prominent figure for his medical expertise.
Then on September 16, 2002, he would later on launch his own talk show – “The Dr. Phil Show.”
According to the network, the show was an instant hit when it debuted in 2002. In fact, it has consistently ranked in the top two in its genre in the ratings. Since then The Dr. Phil Show has become one of the most-watched shows ever. He used his show as a platform to share real stories about real people, which the majority of his audience could relate to.
His show is also where his audience met his wife, Robin McGraw. Dr. Phil has been married to his wife Robin since 1972. Together, they have Jay, 43, and Jordan, 36. Both Jay and his father, who is also an artist, have worked together on several projects. Jordan on the other hand has started a successful music career. Dr. Phil has been on the air for over 3000 episodes and Robin has never missed one. In fact, she is always ready to share her thoughts with the studio audience, if needed.
Following his entry into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame in 2015, Dr. Phil McGraw earned his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 2020.
And of course, amid the success of the show, it has also encountered some hiccups along the way. The show, which is known to delve into taboo and highly controversial topics, has become the subject of debate multiple times.
Just a year ago, BuzzFeed got some scoop from over a dozen current and former “Dr. Phil” employees that their experience working on the show is not as good as many thought it would be. Some of them described working at the show as “traumatizing” and “a battle zone.”
In defense, H. Patrick Morris, McGraw’s attorney at the time, “categorically denied” these claims and allegations.
McGraw has also been called out for how he handled the interview with actress Shelley Duvall back in 2016. People also did not appreciate his post-show treatment of the show’s infamous guest Danielle Bregoli, now known as “Bhad Bhabie.” And others can’t simply forget his “betrayal” of Britney Spears back in 2008 when she was struggling with mental health.
In 2020, McGraw also caused a stir by criticizing the efforts to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. He said back then that the high death toll is an example of the failure of such efforts. He even compared this to death rates caused by smoking cigarettes and accidental pool drowning.
After receiving widespread backlash online for his comments, he posted a video explanation for his reaction saying that it was all because of his worries about the effect of the restrictions on the public’s mental health.
